Water and Sewer

The goal of this project was the continuation of the investment and improvement of the City of Asheville’s water system through Capital Improvement Projects in order to provide safe and reliable water service. This project consisted of a survey, hydraulic analysis, engineering design, construction administration, and other related professional services for approximately 26,700 Linear Feet (LF) of water main replacements and improvements along various streets within the Kenilworth and Malvern Hills neighborhoods. Additionally, the project included approximately 1,000 LF of new 30-inch water main along Tunnel Road near the Kenilworth neighborhood.

Cole Surveying & Design provided the required professional surveying services as a subconsultant to an engineering company for the design of water system upgrades within these neighborhoods.  The survey began with the establishment of survey control on the N.C. Grid System – NAD 83 and North American Vertical Datum of 1988 utilizing G.P.S. receivers and the NC Real Time Network.  Control was adjusted and processed on NC grid lengths in the office. With adjusted control, field crews then began mapping existing conditions that included streets (paving, centerline, curb and gutter, sidewalks, etc.), waterlines marked by COA, visible utilities (such as sanitary sewer manholes, stormwater structures, overhead utilities, culverts, water valves, fire hydrants, water meters, gas valves and marked gas lines, utility poles, light poles, etc.), signs, significant or specimen trees, spot elevations and breaklines to generate topography generated on a 2’ contour interval, and invert elevations of all stormwater structures and sanitary sewer manholes as well as pipe size and diameter. 

Cole Surveying & Design also completed the required as-built surveying for the project while under construction.  This scope included location of newly installed waterline alignment, water valves, fire hydrants, water meters, and air release valves.
